Potential donors of material should be aware that, even if their donation is a gift to the Trust, expenses are incurred by the Trust in handling their donation. The material has to be stored and catalogued and very often insured and, although the trustees all give their time freely, the professional archivists employed for cataloguing do not.

Donations of Material

Donations can take a number of forms;

  1. A completely free gift. Here the ownership of the material passes completely to the Trust. It will be added it to the Archive if a new item; used to upgrade the collection if it is a superior copy to that already held; sold for the benefit of the Trust if it duplicates an item already in the Archive.
  2. A conditional gift. To be returned to the donor if a copy is found to be already in the Archive.
  3. A loan. This generally applies to larger collections of items such as the records of a national body or major club. In all cases a Loan Agreement will be entered into with the donating organisation.

Monetary Donations

Financial support is particularly welcome, of course. Again it is essential to get in touch with the secretary since, if you are a taxpayer, your donation can be increased by 28% by making a Gift Aid declaration. This simply involves you in signing a form which the secretary will supply.

Leave a Legacy

If you have enjoyed cycling during your lifetime you may wish to help others to do the same. The Trust has benefited considerably from legacies; indeed, the Trust was founded as a result of a legacy from the late Frank Whitt whose vision it was to help others enjoy cycling.

Here are examples of the wording your solicitor could use in drafting your will:

If you would like to leave a specific sum of money:

"I give to The Cycle Touring and Countryside Trust, Registered Charity No. 272792, the sum of £..... to be applied for its general purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Honorary Secretary or other proper officer shall be sufficient to discharge for the same."

If you would like to leave a residuary legacy:

"I give all the residue of my estate both real and personal to The Cycle Touring and Countryside Trust, Registered Charity No. 272792 absolutely to be applied for its general purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Honorary Secretary or other proper officer shall be sufficient discharge for the same\"
